- The organizers of the New York-based Minecraft event "MineOrama" have postponed the event indefinitely, leading some would-be attendees to call foul.
MineOrama, which is unaffiliated with Minecraft creator Mojang Specifications, was set to kick off this week in New York. An abrupt cancellation notice was put up on the official site and across social networks, stating that "unforeseen circumstances" had forced the change. Regardless, it said, the event will be rescheduled in the coming weeks and previously sold tickets would still be honored at the event.
Some attendees across Facebook and Twitter have reacted sharply, requesting refunds and claiming dishonest business practices. MineOrama organizers, for their part, have denied the accusations across the board. Its tweet announcing the postponement opened with, "please note we are not a scam." Subsequent tweets have apologized, clarified that it has no connection with Mojang, and promised cooperation with authorities. According to the organizers, only 10% of the ticket prices went to staff, with the rest covering legitimate business expenses.
As some have pointed out, even with the best of intentions and event organizers planning to reschedule, the last-minute notice is problematic. In some cases, travel and lodging arrangements were purchased with no ability to obtain a refund, leaving people responsible for a trip to New York without an event to attend.
The MineOrama staff promises that it will be meeting to discuss a new event date next week, and won't be able to offer further information on it until then. Source | |
