- A massive battle broke out in EVE Online yesterday, with damages reaching the equivalent of $200,000 in real world money.
Over 8 Titans –– the largest ships in EVE Online –– have already been destroyed, giving rise to the 1 trillion Interstellar Kredits (an in-game currency) of damage.
The fight erupted when the N3 Alliance, an in-game faction, missed a payment on a station used as a staging ground for the "Halloween War," an EVE Online press release reads. The missed payment resulted in a drop in sovereignty across the local system, leaving it up for capture; the CFC and Russian Coalition then took the station. The current battle is a result of the former owners' counterattack to retake the station.
"Supposedly, it was set up for auto-pay, just like any other bill in real life, but either that didn't happen or the money wasn't in the wallet, and then everything just escalated out of control from there," James Carl, a member of the Pandemic faction, told CBS News. "The dust is still settling on that issue. Everyone is just focused right now on fighting to try to regain control of the system."
Almost a year ago, EVE Online passed half-a-million subscribers, following the battle of Asakai, one of the largest battles in the game to date. These occurrences aren't exceedingly rare, though, as EVE Online has been thriving on human politics and exploration for a decade. Source | |
