Ubisoft has dropped its online pass system, effective immediately. The Uplay Passport code needed to unlock the online features of the recently-released Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will now be provided free-of-charge, and Uplay Passports will no longer be a part of any future Ubisoft games.

Like similar Online Pass systems, the Uplay Passport program required players to activate a unique code only available with new copies of the game. Secondhand purchasers, or those who had borrowed the game, would be required to purchase their own Uplay Passport for an additional fee.

Player feedback, however, has seen Ubisoft now shun the scheme.

“Assassin’s Creed fans, we heard you loud and clear,” writes communications manager Gary Steinman on the Ubisoft Blog.

“In Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, Edward’s Fleet is an innovative online feature that allows a single player to interact with multiple players on consoles or via the game’s companion app. Every new copy of Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag includes the Uplay Passport code needed to unlock this online feature.

“However, we listen to our community and understand that there are concerns over some players’ ability to access this feature, so we have decided to eliminate the cost of the Uplay Passport for Black Flag. This ensures that everyone will be able to use the companion app, Edward’s Fleet, online multiplayer and available bonus content at no additional cost.

“What’s more, Uplay Passport will not be a part of any future Ubisoft games.”

According to Ubisoft the company “has recognized that Passport is no longer the best approach for ensuring that all our customers have the best possible experience with all facets of our games.”

Gamers currently without a Uplay Passport for Black Flag will be able to download one for free from Xbox Live or PlayStation Network. Players who have already purchased a Uplay Passport for Black Flag are advised to contact their local Ubisoft support.

EA killed its own Online Passes earlier this year. Sony clarified yesterday that Sony titles on PS4 would not require an Online Pass and that “most third parties have phased out the use of Online Pass systems, so they’re unlikely to appear on PS4.”
