| Subject: Tarantino's Django Unchained Pulled From Theaters in China Sat Apr 13, 2013 7:02 am | |
| Damn shame the chinese won't be able to enjoy this fine movie. - Quote :
- Even after re-editing the film's gore and violence in order to appease Chinese censors, Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained was pulled from theaters in China on its opening day Thursday for reasons that remain mysterious. The move is a blow as China is now the world's second largest film market.
"We regret that Django Unchained has been removed from theaters and are working with the Chinese authorities to determine whether the film can be rescheduled," the film's overseas distributor Sony Pictures Entertainment said in a statement.
While no official reason for China's decision was given, the New York Times claims "there was talk among some people in the industry that brief nudity in one or two scenes had offended Chinese officials. The move comes after some scenes were reported to have already been edited to conform with the wishes of Chinese censors."
The Guardian cites Sina as claiming Jamie Foxx's full frontal nude scene is to blame. Not the torture he endures during it, but the fact that his junk is flopping out there for all to see. Tarantino had already reportedly overseen the toning down of certain scenes of violence and the dulling of the color of blood splatter.
