- When the official title was announced for Marvel's The Avengers: Age of Ultron, many fans were left scratching their heads, as the title implied that Ultron would be the sequel's main villain. This seemed contradictory to what fans had been expecting given the post-credits tag in the first Avengers, which revealed Thanos as the mastermind behind the Battle of New York.
In a recent interview with Total Film (via Comic Book Movie), director Joss Whedon explained the role of Thanos in Avengers 2 and how he will play into the Marvel cinematic universe at large:
"We have to stay grounded," Whedon said. "It's part of what makes the Marvel universe click -- their relationship to the real world. It's science fiction, and Thanos is not out of the mix, but Thanos was never meant to be the next villain. He's always been the overlord of villainy and darkness."
It's already been confirmed that Thanos will play a role in Guardians of the Galaxy, but how that factors into Age of Ultron, if at all, remains to be seen. Source | |
