For many ultra Batman fans like myself, a lot of these failed projects are already common knowledge. For those who aren't familiar this is a really interesting article on all the failed projects in between when Warner killed the series with Batman & Robin to it's triumphant return in the fantastic Nolan Dark Knight saga.

"Tim Burton had initially signed on to complete his trilogy with ‘Batman Forever’, however he was kicked from the project by Warner Bros due to his inability to create a ‘kid-friendly’ film. Warner Bros had perceived Batman Returns to be a failure, especially because they struggled to sell tie-in merchandise as buyers and parents weren’t happy with the bleak tone of the adult themed movie that was more horror than superhero."

Sad but true. The dark tone of the movie didn't sit well with most at the time including McDonald's shutting down their happy meal tie in for the movie due to parents complaining it was too dark with the "violence and sexual tones". Me personally Batman Returns is my favorite of the Burton/Schumacher series
